Introduction
What is BIBFRAME?
BIBFRAME (Bibliographic Framework) is an initiative designed to update bibliographic description standards to a linked data model, making bibliographic information more useful both within the library community and beyond. The BIBFRAME initiative will support the future of bibliographic description by introducing new approaches to distinguish between conceptual content and its physical or digital form, identify information entities and leverage relationships between entities.
Understanding the BIBFRAME Framework
The BIBFRAME initiative is comprised of a data model and vocabulary for bibliographic description. Supported by the Library of Congress, BIBFRAME is designed to make library data more accessible on the open Web by using a linked data model. In linked data terms, a resource is essentially a link, connecting various entities. A network can be formed with BIBFRAME resources and their connections are described using BIBFRAME relationships. BIBFRAME is designed to replace the MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) format that focuses on records that are self-contained. BIBFRAME aims to better support the creation, sharing, and use of bibliographic data.
Introducing BIBFRAME Lite
BIBFRAME Lite is a more streamlined version of BIBFRAME, created to meet the changing needs of libraries with a more agile and user-friendly approach. BIBFRAME Lite offers a simplified version of the BIBFRAME model from the Library of Congress, developed to provide a more accessible approach than traditional cataloging methods. Platforms like BiblioGraph and FOLIO, supported by a community of library professionals, actively shape and refine BIBFRAME Lite. BIBFRAME Lite aims to revolutionize how libraries manage and share bibliographic data, similar to dynamic web schemas like Schema.org. It provides a standardized yet flexible framework for the library industry. EBSCO licenses BIBFRAME Lite under a CC0 Creative Commons International License.
BIBFRAME Lite supports the future of bibliographic data management. Welcome!
